Shâri` Yûsuf el Gindî

Shâri` Yûsuf el Gindî, Cairo, July 21, 1996

This picture is of a street in Cairo's Central Business District, which was constructed in the late 1800s by Khedive Ismâ`îl on land reclaimed from swamps. The first building on the left, the Cairo office of the Middle East Times, is between Shâri` Muhammad Sabrî Abû el 'Alam and Shâri` Huda Sh`arâwî. The rest of the street curves along from Shâri` Huda Sh`arâwî to Shâri` el Tahrîr. Note the crenellations on the building on the right. Curved streets which "draw the viewer along" and crenellations are features of typical medieval Islamic cities and were also used in this section of Cairo's CBD.
